Gremio VS Internacional: the beginning of a great confrontation
Already in April 1909, Inter began to conduct its first trainings on the field chosen for this purpose in the west of Porto Alegre, in the Ilota region in RuaArlindo. These training sessions, consisting mainly of sparring matches with two teams, continued until mid-July. Finally, the Pope Brothers, who led the entire training process, decide that it is time to test the strength of the team in the game with a worthy opponent. The choice fell on “Gremio”, to whom an official invitation was sent to hold a friendly match. Naturally, no one then imagined that this would be the beginning of the great rivalry between the two clubs.
The game, which hosted the Windmills area (BairroMonhos de Ventro), was scheduled for July 18, 1909. The Poppe brothers themselves chose the lineup for the first game of the club: Luis Poppe, ClitoPortella, Simone, Vignoles, Pires, Wetternich, Joao Poppe, Horacio, Cesar, Mendonsa, Carvalho. Of all these players, only one player-defender ClitoPortella, who moved to Porto Alegre from Rio a year earlier and played for Fluminense for two years, had a real experience of holding matches at the highest level.
The debut was terrifying. “Gremio”, which at that time consisted mainly of German players, completely outplayed Colorados, preventing “Inter” players from even moving to their half of the field. Forwards “Gremio” Edgar Booth and Julio Grunewald tore the entire debutant defense. The episode in the second half was the apotheosis of Inter’s humiliation: goalkeeper GremioGuilhermeCallfelz got tired of just standing at the gate and watching the events at the Inter’s penalty from afar, and he calmly went to the sideline to talk with friends who were watching the game. 0: 10 – this is the sad result of the debut match “Inter”, this was the beginning of GreNala.
In fairness it must be said that the players and the leadership of “Inter” treated this humiliation in the most serious way. The team began to work out with more effort, and the Popp brothers all the time tried to attract new players to the team (In 1911 Enrique Pope managed to persuade three players of Santana do Livramento, Mita Avila, Simão and Felizardo, to go to Inter, and in 1912 th year and the brother of Avila-Benjamin Bendionda Avila, who together with Vignoles and Kluwe became the basis of the first team of the club). By the end of 1909, it was decided to hold a number of friendly matches. And here, towards Inter, the newly created club, formed on the basis of a military college, the Militar Sport Club, also went. In September-November 1909, Inter and Militar played three games in a row, the results of which were much more successful for Colorados: a draw of 0: 0 was recorded on September 7, and on October 10, Inter celebrated its first victory in history: 2: one. The author of the first goal of Inter was Mejia Benjamin Vignoles (Carlos Moreira spent the second). The third game “Inter” lost 1: 2.
In 1910, after the creation of the first football league in the city (Liga de Porto-Alegrense de Foot-Ball), initiated by Gremio and Inter (the Poppé brothers), city championships began to take place. In the first of them (7 clubs participated in it) “Inter” takes the 3rd place. His first company, Colorados, began with a convincing victory over “Nacional de Porto Alegre” 5: 0, but then with the same score lost to Baixad “Gremio” 0: 5. In the remaining games, Colorados won three more times – 5: 0 “Sete de Setembro”, 2: 1 “Fass-Ball” and 7: 2 “Frish-Auff”, and lost 1: 3 to “Militaru” (which won the first city championship).
In 1911, Inter will already be the 2nd in the city championship, but will lose its 3rd Gre-Nal 1:10 (Vinyoles will be the author of the first Inter ball in the history of Gre-Nalov). Then, in August 1912, Colorados will hold their first matches outside Porto Alegre: in San Leopoldo, they will face off with the local GinasioConceicao club and lose 1: 4. But a month later, take a revenge in Porto Alegre 2: 1. In 1912 (for the first time the city championship will be held in two circles) Inter will again be the 2nd, losing only to Gremio. Two Gra-Nala will be lost 0: 6 and 1: 2 (goal scored by Galvro), but the second game was played for the first time in an equal fight. By this time, the team will be joined by two strikers, Francisco Varesh and Bendionda Avila: together with Vignoles and Kluwe, they will be the striking force of the club of these years. On August 11, in the match of the 2nd round, “Inter” will achieve the biggest victory for itself today – with a score of 16: 0, “Nacional de Porto Alegre” will be beaten Tulio-3, Klyuve and Scabilion-one by one).
Now consider one of the latest and most important matches of the Gre-Nal series. It was the match of 2018. Then the fans witnessed a confrontation, which is part of the old Brazilian club competition and is called Gre-Nal. This name was invented by the Gremio fan back in 1926, and it came from the merger of the first letters of Gremio and the ending of Internacional. Both clubs represent the city of Porto Alegre. Last year, at a time when Internacional sought to return to the Brazilian elite, Gremio performed well in Serie A. The Musketeers led by coach Renato Gaucho won the Libertadores Cup (main South American club tournament).
Gremio worthily spent the world club championship, where in the final with the minimum score (0: 1) he lost to Real Madrid. That year, the “immortals” continued to successfully perform at this tournament, they confidently took first place in the group stage, but struggled through to the quarterfinals. They beat the Argentine Estudiantes in the 1/8 final thanks to a better performance after the match penalties. In all 4 home games of the tournament, the “Musketeers” won, but in the away matches they were not so bright, having won only one victory over a clearly weak opponent. In the previous round of Serie A, the “immortal” away tied with “Santos” away. This result is fully consistent with the game. With 41 points, “Gremio” ranked 5th in the table.
After 23 rounds, Internacional led the standings. It is hard to believe in it, because in 2017, the “Colorados” performed in the B Series, and they returned to the elite, taking second place there, followed by “America MG”. At the beginning and in the middle of the year nothing foretold such a breakthrough of the team. Unsuccessfully, the “Reds” performed in the Gaushu championship (Rio Grande do Sul state championship), where they dropped out of the race in the quarter finals, losing to the rival in the sum of two fights (2-0 and 0-3). And in the Brazilian Cup, Inter performed poorly, in the 1/16 of the final, he lost to Vitoria. Colorados did not take part in international competitions, so they were fully focused on the national championship. In the previous round, the “red” houses outplayed one of the strong teams of Serie A – Flamengo (2: 1). Having taken the initiative to his rival, Inter achieved success thanks to counterattacks.
In the Brazilian Championship, Gremio was played at the same level as last season, but confidence was lost in guest fights. In the previous 8 matches of all tournaments, the “Musketeers” were able to win only the weakly played Corinthians (1: 0). At the same time 5 of these fights ended for them unsuccessfully. Equally important is the fact that Inter’s players have one more day of rest on the eve of the upcoming fight, they also have the advantage that the Reds held the previous meeting at home, but Gremio again entered the field in less than three times. .
Between themselves, these teams had a huge number of meetings – 412, 155 wins scored the “Reds”, their rival excelled in 128. In the first round, the in-person match between the teams ended in a goalless draw. Together, the teams spent just three shots on target, and there were a lot of yellow cards – seven. Gremio then sacrificed the result of the match with “Santos”, acting as a semi-reserve team. Two extreme defenders, Moura and Cortez, and the attackers Luan, Everton, Jael, and Maicon did not hit the meeting request. These are the performers on whom a lot depends on the attacking actions of the team. All this was done to ensure that the “Musketeers” were fresh in the Gre-Nal.
The victory of Gremio outwardly looked very tinned, in fact. The problems of Internacional in this match, in my opinion, grew out of extremely concentrated individualism in the team. It was also a splinter football, but in this case it is appropriate to use a similar epithet in a different sense. Inter players played more time according to the formula: “Give me one, I will show them!” out of interaction, out of mutual position. A kind of quilt made and cut out of everything that was in the house. “Red” lacks a single vector, a kind of common intention — specific moments often turn out to be incomplete, half-hearted, without logical conclusion. Against this background, Gremio was notable for coherence of the game mechanism. No, Gremio played tight, making the most of his own advantages, his own teamwork. And even the fact that Celso Roth wards missed the first, did not break the general scheme – the team did not fall on the backless assault. Maybe it sounds a bit primitive, but Gremio, by and large, just managed to play his game, his dynamics, his football. It was productive.
